AU Information

AU Name: Raphael is Raphael. He shrugged off his surname like an old coat almost immediately upon turning and is known mononymously like Madonna and Jesus and Zendaya because he's that important.

AU Age: He was turned at age 41 and has been a vampire for 45 years.

Physical Differences: Raphael does not have his devil's form, but his human form more or less remains the same save for the red color of his eyes. He is handsome, not too old not too young, well dressed, and well spoken. His impression upon people is important!

AU History:
  • Raphael was the only son of a noble. As sole heir, he would want for nothing and developed a habit rather early on of getting bored. Due to this, he pursued many interests, from dancing to swordplay. Not every activity of his was academic or business related, he also got into the pleasures of life as well as gambling. Turns out he is quite good at gambling. Why, with quick wit and eloquence on his side, he barely needed a poker face. Young Raphael was exceedingly magnetic, and thus a master manipulator was nurtured and rewarded.

  • It wasn't enough, though. Raphael's mother died and his father had long since stopped paying much attention to any aspect of his life but telling him what all he was doing wrong. Resentment bubbled between them and eventually Raphael learned of the Vampire courts, being selected, and of course the Finding. He strived to catch the attention of any Gold Court master who might have him. He never feared being chosen or getting the white feather, as it seemed becoming a true vampire would only be an improvement of his already established greatness. Alas, he grew well into adulthood without catching a Maker's eye. He continued his various hobbies but took up a career in what he loves most: words. With his talent and passion for linguistics, he became a prolific writer, specializing mostly in poetry. Vampires and humans alike get a little tickle from his clever phrases and pretty words.

  • Much about the young adult Raphael's life is a mystery, which is deliberate. He married at one point but does not seem to have sired any children. Rumor has it he had genuinely fallen in love with someone behind the scenes, though he won't speak of it. He definitely had favorites. Eventually his father passed, though he is tight lipped about whether or not they had made amends in their relationship or remained estranged.

  • Only a few years into what anyone could see was a normal marriage arrangement, Raphael caught the eye of a Maker and was selected by a teacher in the Red Court. That teacher has long since died but he remained with the Red as it felt most secure for his talents (and there was some partial resentment toward the Gold Court he initially wished to join). With some fair notoriety from his human life, he was a shoe-in to become a Red court teacher himself. He is as diligent in this work as anything else, taking it upon himself to at least recognize all of the novice hopefuls if not know their names and stories. He takes particular interest in those with unusual circumstances and makes no secret of playing favorites. However, as long as he is respected he is generally a serious but solid mentor for younger Youngbloods.

  • He is the Maker of Astarion, and the two maintain some sort of relationship to this day, though getting a direct answer out of Raphael personally about it would be something of a chore. He is fond of his bonds, perhaps even possessive, and will not suffer betrayal by their hands or any ill-will towards them from others.

AU Personality: The biggest thing that changes about Raphael's AU personality is that, perhaps, he leans more toward neutral than straight up evil. Not fully redeemable or "good" mind you, but not ruthlessly antagonistic. A devil, if you will. While he would seek some benefit from pretty much any deeper relationship in his life, you generally aren't going to be doomed to give him your soul or anything. While in canon he is surely seen as a Bad Idea whether you side with him or not, his AU counterpart isn't always using others for nefarious ends and may actually have a healthy mentorship with someone he's taken under his wing depending on their circumstances (someone like Mol, for example, he would have been more protective toward, perhaps even parental and not straight up a guy inviting her into his van for some candy). Still entirely of benefit for him of course, but not necessarily the worst decision you've ever made. For the most part though he remains smarmy, enamored with rhymes and riddles, and very particular about being respected. He knows he's great and expects everyone else to as well. Anything less will be met with derision and disdain. He is more hands-on in his AU version, whereas in canon he would sooner let his minions and followers (or Haarlep) do the little things.

Course Information

Court: Raphael is of the Red Court. He is "silver-tongued" as they say, and with the deep alluring voice to match it, it is very easy for him to persuade others to see things his way. This makes seduction rather easy for him. While making you believe you're living out your greatest desires, he's actually getting what he wants above all. He already has a high opinion of himself, so it only makes sense he belongs to the Red Court, who all believe they are the best and brightest (and they are). Raphael is also enormously passionate about the arts, and a talented wordsmith himself. He has an appreciation for more than just writing of course, and knows music, the arts, and every little detail about culture and society. Need to know how to behave at some court? At a ball? In front of a king? He's got it down to a science. Lastly, he is skilled in the art of weaponry, considering all aspects of the Red Court's priorities to be equally as important. While he would sooner use his words to get what he wants, he won't hesitate to shove a blade through some hearts to make a point either.

Subjects of Interest: Raphael specializes in the arts and seduction, while only teaching one or two weaponry classes a season. While he does consider them all equal, his talents are of course in words and charm. In the arts, he lectures most frequently about literature and linguistics. In seduction, he approaches from the angle of seducing with words before the body, though knowing when it's more useful to get secrets out of a romp in the sheets instead of sweet nothings of promises to come.

Maker/Blood Claim: Raphael is the Maker of Astarion. Though I didn't get any bites (haha) on the meme, he may have (or had) a couple of younger novices! He has a small group of his favorites, though Astarion- as a fellow teacher- has more of a unique dynamic.
